Netizens say 'King The Land' gave an "Inadequate Apology" regarding controversy surrounding culturally insensitive portrayal of an Arab character

AKP STAFF

The production team of JTBC's Saturday and Sunday drama 'King the Land' issued a second apology on July 10 regarding the controversy surrounding the culturally insensitive portrayal of an Arab character.

Following the broadcast of 'King the Land,' which featured two episodes involving the Arab prince Samir on July 8 and 9, the character was portrayed as a 'promiscuous' individual who indulges in drinking and women. This portrayal received criticism from Arab viewers, who accused the show of disrespecting Arab culture.

In response to the escalating controversy, the production team initially stated that the drama's characters, regions, and place names were entirely fictitious, without any intention to depict princes from a specific country. However, this statement only intensified viewers' dissatisfaction, leading the production team to release a second statement.

In the second apology, 'King the Land' emphasized that the characters, regions, place names, and other elements depicted in the drama are fictional and clarified that there was no intention to ridicule or distort any specific culture. The team assured viewers that they would approach future production with greater care.

Nevertheless, Korean netizens criticized the lack of regret in the production team's apology and pointed out that they have not made a proper apology. Netizens commented, "This is not an apology," "The level of their apology...is just..." "I'm not going to watch this drama anymore," "They need to apologize better," "They didn't even say sorry," "Wow, they haven't apologized even with their second statement. I'm not going to watch this drama anymore," "fictitious? that's ridiculous," "They should have just said they were ignorant and should have just apologized," "Is it hard to say sorry?" and "Where is the apology?"

I particularly hate racism. And I read several racist comments under the 'Apology' article. BUT I'm failing to see what it was about the character that was "culturally insensitive."

Does no Arab person go to a nightclub? And this character, being a popular famous wealthy person, wouldn't he become flanked by people, especially by women, no matter where he went? Before you respond, think about these K-pop Idols and how they're treated by fanatics. AGAIN, not all Arabs are Muslim. Wouldn't it be stereotypical to believe that?

I don't believe those who are making an issue of this even watched the show. Because the Prince character was never vulgar. He was shown to be sweet, respectful, endearing, and a good friend. He had alcohol in front of him, but he was never shown to be drunk. He told the FL the story about his first love and how he'd been heartbroken by her refusal to marry him. Afterwards, you could see him falling for the FL and he did things to win her over. There was NO womanizing.

It is my strong opinion that this depiction requires no apology.
