On June 16, HYBE Labels x BeLift Lab's new girl group survival program 'R U Next?' introduced its 22 contestants to viewers with a series of individual profile films.
Of the 22 contestants, the youngest is maknae Sakata Ena, born on February 17, 2011. Should Ena successfully earn a place in BeLift Lab's new K-Pop girl group, which will be created through the winning members of the survival program, she'll definitely take the crown as the youngest K-Pop idol of the current generation yet.
But some K-netizens are of the opinion that a 12-year old is too young to compete in a highly stressful survival program, with her face and actions being broadcast to a global audience.
Many left comments such as,
"Uhmm... that's an elementary schooler."
"I feel like she could be my daughter."
"I personally think K-Pop idols should at least wait until they graduate middle school before debuting."
"I do not want to count how many years younger she is than me..."
"A survival show at that age.. Just going through the K-Pop training system itself would be so emotionally draining at that age."
"This is a little too much."
"She's the same age as my son."
"It's true that a handful of trainees begin training at a young age to debut, but there must be a reason why they remain hidden from the public eye for a long time..."
"She's the same age as Choo Sarang..."
Meanwhile, 'R U Next?' is scheduled to premiere on JTBC at the end of this month on June 30 at 8:50 PM KST.
I'm honestly disappointed that Korean netizens weren't more critical of this. Having a literal elementary school kid on your idol competition show is pure insanity. Is everyone just going to let this happen?
