K-netizens are expressing both shock and discomfort over the title of Choi Ye Na's upcoming comeback title track, "Hate Rodrigo" (Feat. (G)I-DLE's Yuqi).
On June 21 KST, Choi Ye Na released the first MV teaser for the title track from her upcoming 2nd single album, 'Hate XX'.
At first, some netizens were confused over the meaning of the title. But eventually, it became clear that the title was blatantly naming pop singer Olivia Rodrigo.
While this is not the first time that Choi Ye Na has shown strong "influences" from the American pop star in terms of concepts, music, lyrics, etc, many netizens are of the opinion that the actual use of another singer's name in a song has crossed the line.
In fact, several netizens pointed out, "If some nobody artist from another country released a song titled 'Hate BTS' or 'Hate BLACKPINK', but then they passed it off as 'Oh, we are such big fans~', wouldn't that make you mad?".
Others reacted with comments such as,
"Even if the lyrics turn out to be good and positive in the end, outright putting the word 'Hate' in front of another person's name is itself rude... Who would feel happy if someone who claimed to be their fan went around hash-tagging 'Hate' everywhere?"
"It's pretty risky marketing..."
"Is she hoping that Olivia Rodrigo will notice her if she releases a song called that..?"
"This is embarrassing, but it's also true that without something like this, it's hard to get anyone's attention these days."
"Yena used to have such a bright and happy image... This is upsetting."
"Is she Chinese..? Just blatantly copying people more famous than her for attention..?"
"Whoever thought of this, whoever approved this, whoever decided to market this, they all need to be fired. This is an embarrassment to the entire K-Pop community."
"Is she Chinese..? Just blatantly copying people more famous than her for attention..?" Simultaneously really prejudiced and really funny.
