With the ending of JTBC drama 'Doctor Cha,' actor Kim Byung Chul revealed his thoughts on the beloved drama in a recent interview.
'Doctor Cha' is a drama that depicts the life of Cha Jung Sook (played by Uhm Jung Hwa), who becomes a first-year resident after being a housewife for 20 years.
Kim Byung Chul, who played the main character's husband, Seo In Ho, shared that the secret to the success of 'Doctor Cha' was, "It seems that the response to the story of a woman whose career was cut off was greater than I thought. I feel that there are many people who want to see the story of overcoming these difficulties and growing."
"'Doctor Cha' is a story that inspires and gives hope even to men. I could feel that there was a lot of hope for this story," he continued.
But as popular as it was, there were also controversies. 'Doctor Cha' has been criticized for lines that reveal negative perceptions of Crohn's disease, downplaying thyroid cancer, and generalizing the side effects of herbal medicine. Regarding this, Kim Byung Chul said, "I think I should have been a little more careful. It's someone's growth story, but it's a part that can hurt some people. This should have been handled carefully."
He expressed his apology, "I also felt a sense of responsibility as a member of 'Doctor Cha'. I feel sorry for those who felt bad."
Regarding the reason why he was loved even though he is a nasty villain he replied, “Seo In Ho is not a playboy. He thinks that if Seung Hee (played by Myung Se Bin) had been another woman, I wonder if he would have cheated. I don't think there are many possibilities. I think he was affected by her because she was his first love. So he seems to have a different feeling from a playboy, so I wonder if that's why it was okay."
When asked if he was satisfied with the ending he replied, "It's a drama about Jung Sook's growth. I think it's a fitting ending in terms of growth."
I think he did an excellent job for the character he was playing. You just hate the guy and what he stands for, but know he's going to pay for it. I didn't think I was going to like this Drama, but it surprised me. I Loved it.
