Koreans express frustration over cafe and restaurant menus entirely in English purely for aesthetic purposes

Some Korean restaurants and cafes are currently under public scrutiny as they face increasing disapproval from consumers and online communities. This discontentment stems from a burgeoning trend among these establishments to publish their menus solely in English, a practice that has sparked a wave of frustration among local patrons.

Recently, a post titled 'I wish there was a law to have menus written in Korea' that has been causing a buzz across various online communities. The post featured images of menu boards solely written in English, completely excluding the Korean language.

The post's creator expressed their disappointment, emphasizing that it was perplexing to have an English-only menu in a Korean restaurant. They argued that it was essential for the menu to clearly indicate the names of the dishes in Korean so that customers, including the elderly and young children, could easily understand and place their orders.

Furthermore, the poster highlighted the irony that even though the menu was in English, it proved ineffective when an actual foreigner attempted to order using English. This situation frustrated both customers and staff. The poster explained, "When a real foreign customer comes and orders in English, the staff doesn't even understand what they're saying. They have signs up indicating time limits in Korean but their menus are in English."

The issue has ignited a debate among netizens, with opinions divided on the matter. Some argue that incorporating English into menus is a way to accommodate international visitors and align with global trends. However, others assert that Korean restaurants should prioritize catering to local customers by providing menus in their native language.

The thing is this was an issue that older people were complaining about but now lots of younger people are complaining. It’s the lack of Korean, lots of menus have both the English/Korean item name and description written in Korean and those seem to be fine. Other places have a separate English menu for those international customers
