Rappers Ravi and Nafla could be facing a sentence of about two years in prison for violating the Military Service Act.
On the morning of April 11 KST, the first trial of 9 people involved in the case, including Ravi and Nafla, was held in the 7th Criminal Division of the Seoul Southern District Court. On the same day, prosecutors asked that Ravi and Nafla to be sentenced to two years in prison and two years and six months in prison, respectively.
According to the prosecution, after Ravi received a grade 3 in a physical examination related to military service in 2012, he applied for a postponement of his military service on the grounds of attending university, asthma, and skin disease. When it became impossible to postpone military service after 2021, when he turned 28, it was confirmed that he also submitted a pledge to the Seoul Regional Military Manpower Administration stating that he would faithfully enlist in the future.
The two faced charges of evading military service by receiving a false diagnosis of epilepsy through collusion with a broker and submitting a false diagnosis to the Military Manpower Administration.
Ravi enlisted in October of last year and served as a social worker. Prosecutors believe that Ravi signed a contract worth 50 million won with a military service broker even though he has no health problems, and pretended to have epilepsy and received an alternative service decision.
Ravi has admitted to all charges and in his closing argument said, "While undergoing trial until now, I desperately realized how great my fault was and how many people I had hurt. I apologize to the patients and their families. I will not forget this time for the rest of my life and live with a heart of atonement."
In February 2021, Nafla also was assigned as a social worker. Nafla is accused of conspiring with a broker to avoid military service and falsifying public service worker attendance records.
Prior to controversy over military service evasion through pretending to be depressed, Nafla had a record of receiving a suspended indictment in 2019 for smoking marijuana (violation of the Narcotics Control Act). Although he expressed his will of reflection, he was once again brought to trial on cannabis charges in 2020 and is a drug offender who was sentenced to 10 months in prison and 2 years probation.
I hate those kinds of apologies to fans, because they're not sorry they did the deed. They're only sorry they got caught. I get that no one wants to do military service in Korea, but Ravi went out of his way to deceive his own government and the public. That just seems like a slap in the face to those who looked up to him as an idol.
