Korean netizens are talking about TWICE's latest release.
On March 10th, TWICE came back with "Set Me Free." "Set Me Free" is the title song of their 12th mini album 'Ready to Be', and it has a liberating and inspiring message to all listeners, encouraging those who feel tied down or restrained by unimportant factors in life to set themselves free and love with all their might.
Shortly after the release, "Set Me Free" entered the Melon Top 100 chart at 83rd place.
This had netizens express their opinions online across many different online communities, as TWICE is the top girl group in Korea. Some of the comments include:
"I saw the song didn't make it to the top 100 a few hours ago. And this is my first time seeing TWICE's song not making it on the chart the day after their comeback."
"I don't think it's the song's quality issue. 'Talk that Talk' was really good but it also didn't have good records."
"Well, I liked the song..."
"They only had about 70K listeners in the first 24 hours of release. I think the group lost a good number of listeners which means they should come out with a really good title song to overcome this issue."
"I think not many people use Melon anymore. Everyone's on Spotify."
"I think it's the JYP. I can't remember the last time I loved a song from a JYP artist."
"It's been only a day smh Wait until they show up on music shows."
"I really liked 'Moonlight Sunrise.' Why can't they make that song a title?"
"Maybe people were busy watching the baseball and 'The Glory'."
"I just love how active TWICE is. Please continue releasing music."
"Well now that they have been in the industry for a while, they can't top every single song. But I love how they are maintaining the group and continuing to release new music for their fans. A lot of idols don't do that. I'm just envious as a K-Pop stan."
"lol who cares about Melon? No one streams on Melon nowadays."
What do you think?
I.....like the song okay. The vocals are nice, the energy is there, and I genuinely enjoy the vibe of the song overall. That being said, I feel like there are several moments where the melodic line and harmonies take some bold and exciting chances- only to fall flat with a basic resolution. It's frustrating, because there are at least two moments consistently in the song where they try to explore a closely related key with a possible pivot chord and it gets your ears really excited. But then it doesn't really go anywhere, making those moments sort of obsolete and disappointing, like you were expecting something that didn't quite get delivered. Even the second part of the refrain, you hear the first half with the first two soloist and you're waiting for a build up that doesn't happen. They've had this issue with some songs before, it's not a matter of the style or aesthetic- it just feels like their producers start with a couple of really good ideas but then get lazy or just don't want to work them through harmonically, leaving you wanting.
