Former president Chun Doo Hwan's grandson, Chun Woo Won, who was arrested at the Incheon International airport upon arriving in South Korea, has honored his promise to pay respect to those who died during the Gwangju Democratization movement.
On March 29, Chun Woo Won was released from the investigation after the police arrested him on charges of drug use. The police requested hair and urine samples to send to the National Institute of Scientific Investigation and investigate Chun Woo Won's claims of drug use.
Since Chun Woo Won had just administered drugs and had admitted to the charges, the police decided to investigate him without detention. After being released, Chun Woo Won was greeted by the May 18 Memorial Foundation to escort him to the 5.18 Memorial Cultural Center in Gwangju. As soon as Chun Woo Won finished his investigations, he headed to Gwangju immediately.
Previously, Chun Woo Won created much stir after exposing his family secrets and corruption. He revealed these secrets during a drug-fueled live stream, causing shock. He claimed that his family lived luxuriously through the slush funds his grandfather had stolen in the past.
Upon arriving in South Korea, Chun Woo Won stated that he would like to personally deliver his apology to the victims of the Gwangju Uprising and pay respects to those who died and their bereaving families.
