For many years Melon was unrivaled and the dominant music streaming service in South Korea. Melon is South Korea's biggest music subscription service, with over 28 million monthly active users.
However, with the growth of YouTube Music, Melon is slowly beginning to lose market share in South Korea as more people are moving over to YouTube Music.
Since 2021, YouTube Music has been slowly gaining market share, while Melon Music has been steadily losing market share.
Now Korean netizens are concerned that Melon will continue to lose users in the future and will lose more relevance.
Korean netizens commented, "I think Melon is good to use when I want to listen to a specific song but I use both services," "I think YouTube music is just easier to use," "I canceled my Melon subscription," "Bye Melon," "I want Korean companies to do better but Melon stopped providing discounts," "I only use Melon for streaming," "I stopped using Melon too," "I hope Melon doesn't go out of business," "I like YouTube Music's algorithm more," "I use both," "I still like Melon more than YouTube music," and "Melon needs to shift strategy if they want to gain back market share."
You tube is way easier to use for international fans, like us in the US. It’s hard to navigate melon due to language barriers.
