First-week debut sales are mostly 4th-gen now, indicating a generational shift

AKP STAFF

Is the 4th-generation taking over first-week album sales now?

On online forums, netizens are looking at the data from the end of last year showing the figures for first-week debut album sales. These results contained albums for all groups' debut releases and not only the recent ones.

Regardless, the takeover of the list included albums mostly from 4th-gen groups such as X1, Wanna One, NewJeans, LE SSERAFIM, ENHYPEN, NMIXX, Kep1er, TREASURE, IVE, and AB6IX.

Although X1 and Wanna One have disbanded, netizens are noticing how much of an impact Mnet's 'Produce 101' had on the idol scene long-term.

They also expressed surprise that it was really hard to find albums from the 2nd or 3rd generation. The data seems to indicate that the number of albums sold seems to generally go up, which would be simultaneous with more younger idols debuting.

Artists following AB6IX from the 11th place to the 30th are as follows: IZ*ONE, TXT, TEMPEST, HIGHLIGHT, JYJ, CRAVITY, JBJ, ATBO, VIVIZ, CIX, MXM, EPEX, Stray Kids, TNX, DRIPPIN, IOI, NCT 127, MIRAE, WEi, iKON.

No shiz sherlock. Back in Gen 2 selling over 300k would have easily put you among the Top 5 best-selling albums of the year, by Gen 3 it was 1 million, now with Gen 4 if you're not selling over 2 million you're lucky to even make it to the Top 5. Any veteran K-pop fan knows that K-pop has and continues expand year after year with records being broken literally days or weeks apart.

Makes sense. Kpop has grown massively over the past few years. First gen started Kpop, 2nd gen expanded it to more of Asia and 3rd gen expanded it globally. If they can continue the global push, 4th gen (or maybe 5th gen) will see debut albums from a big company easily sell over 1 million in the first week
