Classical music and modern K-Pop may seem like polar opposites in terms of genre and sound, but the results of combining the two can be surprisingly amazing. Here are some K-Pop songs/performances that have sampled some of the most iconic classical music pieces.
ATEEZ - Wonderland Symphony 9
For one of their stages during Kingdom, ATEEZ performed a new rendition of their popular and fan-favorite song, "Wonderland." The original song is already grand and epic, and who would've thought they could make it much better than it already was by sampling Beethoven's "Symphony no. 9"
Golden Child - Wannabe (RTK ver.)
We have so many great performances from Road to Kingdom, and this one is an exceptional one. Not only did they change their popular song "Wannabe" to sample "Paganini 24 Caprices No. 24 in A Minor Op.1," but member, Joochan also excellently played the violin live on stage.
Red Velvet - Feel My Rhythm
Red Velvet never ceases to amaze us with their amazing songs and performances. Hence, it was no surprise that this song became a hot topic upon its release for sampling J.S. Bach’s "Air On The G String."
BLACKPINK - Shut Down
Whenever these girls are in the area, it will cause a shutdown indeed. Their latest comeback sampled "La Campanella," adding grandeur to the song.
(G)I-DLE - Nxde
Are we even surprised that the genius Soyeon not only wrote and composed this beautiful masterpiece but also brilliantly sampled "Habanera."
PURPLE KISS - Pretty Psycho
Definitely an underrated song, but this amazing b-side truly showed who's the maestro and sampled "Beethoven's Symphony No. 5." This song is more than just pretty good... it's REALLY good.
Billlie - Everybody’s got a $ecret
Fitting with the holiday season, this song started off by sampling the favorite "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" from the Nutcracker. With how great this song is, plus the girls' amazingly beautiful vocals, it has no business being only a B-side.
The Boyz - Quasi una fantasia (RTK ver.)
Another amazing performance from Road To Kingdom, The Boyz pulled a beautiful rendition of VIXX'S "Shangri-La" by sampling Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14, "Quasi una fantasia." The entire performance, from their outfits, choreography, story, vocals, and raps, was just outstanding and breathtaking.
F.T. ISLAND - Missing You
This band is always impressing us, even 12 years later. This song samples Vivaldi's "Winter," and it just fits the song so well, especially with the emotion in Hongki's voice.
Cherry Bullet - Hands Up
One of the best things that happened in 2020 was this comeback. They sampled "Für Elise" in the majority of this song and had everyone saying, "I love Beethoven oppa's comeback," it's so funny.
SF9 - Jungle Game
They made this song super fun to listen to because of how they sampled Edvard Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King." It was interesting how they included the famous tune in their electronic synths and club beats.
DREAMCATCHER- Good Night
Dreamcatcher can truly turn anything into rock and would totally rock it so hard. They even turned George Frideric Handel‘s "Suite No. 7 in G minor," a piece written for piano and harpsichord, but boldly reinvented it on a guitar for a hard-hitting rock track.
VIXX - Fantasy
The song started and continued to sample Ludwig van Beethoven’s most popular piece, “Moonlight Sonata.” These princes are known for turning everything they do super majestic, and this one was just another proof of that.
MOMOLAND - Freeze
The classical circus-like vibe tune in the song is sampled from Julius Fucik's “Entrance of the Gladiators” and gives this song an enjoyable theme to match the girls' bright energy and image.
As a former contemporary dance student, it was no surprise that he dropped this beautiful work of art as his solo song. Not only did he beautifully carry the song with his vocals, but the dance to this truly showcased his talent as a modern art lover. This song sampled Spanish composer Manuel de Falla's “La Vida Breve.”
Here's a few more I can think of:
Gfriend's "Summer Rain"
Samples: Robert Schumann's Dichterliebe
SMTown "Hope" (Originally by H.O.T)
Samples: Behoven Symphony No. 9 "Ode to Joy"
Shinhwa's "T.O.P."
Samples: Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake"
