When a K-Pop group makes their debut, the name is the first thing potential fans notice. In the competitive K-pop market, a name won't make or break a group, but choosing wisely can be very important. Many K-pop groups have interesting and unique names. Japan is the second-largest music market in the world. K-pop artists promote themselves in Japan too. There are many K-Pop groups and soloists who are very popular in Japan. Even the K-pop music industry has a large number of Japanese idols. Some K-pop groups are known by different names in Japan.
Here are eight K-pop groups and their Japanese name.
BTS
BTS, or Bangtan Boys, is the most popular K-pop group. BTS is also known as Bangtan Sonyeondan, Beyond the Scene, and Bulletproof Boy Scouts. They are very popular in Japan too. This seven-member boy group from Hybe has a huge fan following in Japan. BTS made their Japanese debut in 2014. BTS is known by a different name in Japan. They are referred to as “Bōdan Shōnendan” in Japan.
Girl’s Generation
SM Entertainment’s second-generation girl group, Girls’ Generation, is also known as SNSD and SoShi. But in Japan, the name of the group is pronounced as “Shōjo Jidai.” In 2011, SNSD experienced a meteoric rise in the Japanese music sector. Girls’ Generation was regarded as the most popular K-Pop girl group in Japan alongside KARA.
IZ*ONE
IZ*One was a South Korean- Japanese girl group formed through the popular survival program “Produce 48”. The group was composed of both Korean and Japanese members. IZ*One was one of the more popular K-Pop groups both in South Korea and Japan when the group was active. However, in Japanese, the group’s name was known as “Aizuwan.”
Loona
Loona is a fourth-generation K-pop girl group Formed by the record label Blockberry Creative. Loona is also known by the name “Girl of the Month.” The group made their Japan debut in September 2021. They are signed under Universal Music Japan for their Japanese activities. The group is known as “Kongetsu no Shōjo” in Japan.
The Grace
The Grace is a South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment in 2005. They are also known as CSJH and CSJH The Grace. It stands for "Cheon Sang Ji Hui The Grace," their Korean name. The group is known as “Tenjochiki” in their Japanese releases. In 2006 they made their debut in Japan.
TVXQ
SM Entertainment’s boy band TVXQ stands for Tong Vfang Xien Qi. Additionally, they go by the acronym DBSK, which stands for Dong Bang Shin Ki, which is their Korean name. TVXQ has a sizable fan base in Japan and used to be one of the most popular K-pop groups there. The group is known as “Tohoshinki” in their Japanese releases.
WJSN
WJSN, also known as Cosmic Girls, is a South Korean-Chinese girl group formed by Starship Entertainment. The group is composed of South Korean and Chinese members. There are a total of thirteen members. The winner of Queendom 2 WJSN is known as “Uchuu Shoujo” in Japan.
