'Street Man Fighter' dancer Vata finally speaks up about the plagiarism controversy surrounding his 'New Thing' choreography

AKP STAFF

The leader of the dance crew We Dem Boyz, 'Street Man Fighter' contestant Vata finally spoke up about the plagiarism controversy surrounding his "New Thing" choreography sequence.

On October 14, Vata released the following statement via his Instagram.

"This is Vata.
I thought this was just a cold wind passing through, but now I've decided to release a statement as to prevent any further misunderstandings.
First, regarding the controversy, when I first heard the music, I immediately thought of the wilderness. So I mimicked a scene of a character appearing on a motorcycle or a horse and created this move for the intro. This is why there is a motion for starting the motorcycle's ignition at first, as well as a rear kick, and finally, a move that signals the rider arriving and getting off from the motorcycle or the horse, this is how the sequence is connected.
I believe that the intention behind this move sequence is entirely different from the move sequence that it is currently being compared to.
As one who loves the culture of dance, I believe that it is formidable to respect fellow artists and choreographers in the field. However, I do not think this is the case right now, which I find unfortunate.
Regardless of the reason, as the controversy arose partially due to my involvement, I feel apologetic toward viewers of 'Street Man Fighter' as well as those who have cheered on We Dem Boyz. I will repay you for the burden I have caused through even better performances. Thank you."

Earlier this week, controversy arose over the similarities between Vata's choreography for Zico's 'Street Man Fighter' track "New Thing" and ATEEZ's choreography for the 2019 track "Say My Name". One of the original choreographers of "Say My Name", Anze Skrube, also spoke up to address the similarities between the choreographies, suspecting that Vata's move sequenced was "inspired" by the "Say My Name" choreo.

If the artists and the OG choreographer didn't feel good about it u should atleast apologize if they being misunderstanding or their feelings is not good about it. But rather u apologize to a viewer instead of them so that they will stop attacking u. Lmao. Vata vata. People will cover their eyes because ateez is from small company when it's come to big company y'all open your eyes and keep on defending them till the end. Poor ateez they just want to protect what they own.

He's trying to say it's ok because the "meaning" of the dance is different, and dance moves can be incorporated into different sequences. That is true, but bro, that's not the case here. That dance move itself is a sequence. It's not a common dance move you can copy and paste, especially in your "original choreography." He's not getting the point, and trying to change topics by talking about the intentions behind his dance move - but he contradicts himself because Ateez's dance is also a "driving" move. At the same time, he's trying to subtly diss that Ateez and the choreographer is acting too sensitive about it instead of "respecting" him.
