When you look at a K-pop group, each member plays a unique role. A very integral role, or perhaps the most important in a K-pop group, is the leader. A leader is a member who literally leads the group, and that person is typically the oldest person in the group.
However, there are groups where that is not the case, and that can be for various reasons. There are leaders who aren't the oldest, possibly because they have the most experience or because they've been with the company for the longest time. There are many reasons why the oldest people wouldn't be the leader, and today -- we will be checking out some groups where the leader is not the oldest! Let's take a look below.
(G)I-DLE - Soyeon
Soyeon was chosen as the leader due to her multi-talents and her ability to not only sing, rap and dance but also because she is able to produce her own music! She also made an appearance on television before her (G)I-DLE debut through programs such as "Unpretty Rapstar" and "Produce 101."
TXT - Soobin
Soobin said that he was very burdened by the leader position, but his members helped him along the way, and it has become easier through his members' support!
WJSN - Exy
The charismatic leader is not the oldest in WJSN -- Seola is actually the oldest in the group. Her rapping skills and her previous experience on appearances on "Unpretty Rapstar" shaped her to become a better leader today.
NCT127 - Taeyong
Taeyong does a great job leading NCT127, and it may be difficult as the members are multicultural and there are a lot of members, but he does a great job according to his groupmates!
TWICE - Jihyo
Jihyo has been part of JYP Entertainment for ten years before her official debut with TWICE. She definitely has the qualifications of being one of the longest trainees before debuting in the company!
VICTON - Seung Sik
After Han Seung Woo left the group for his military duties, Seung Sik stepped up to become the leader, and he is doing an absolutely amazing job!
EVERGLOW - Sihyun
To give more change and something new, Sihyun stepped up as the second leader after the first leader "retired," and it seems that they have a leadership rotation system!
BTS - RM
RM is multitalented not only in music but with his brain too! When BTS first debuted, although he wasn't the oldest, RM seemed to be the most mature and confident out of all the members. Being able to speak English fluently, RM is doing a great job as a leader not only in Korea, but globally as well! He was the perfect choice to lead BTS.
2NE1 - CL
Though they have technically disbanded, CL served as the leader of 2NE1 though there were two "unnies" above her that were seven years older than her! Her charisma and swag, paired with her talent to pretty much do anything, were probably the reason that got her the leadership spot. Heck, she even had an awesome song called "Leaders" with G-Dragon and Teddy:
WINNER - Kang Seung Yoon
Kang Seung Yoon is actually the youngest member of WINNER, but he stepped up to be the leader of the group, and this group has been in the A-game due to his prime leadership.
IVE - Yujin
Rising girl group IVE's leader is Yujin, who isn't actually the oldest in the group but was probably selected due to her talent and her former experience with PRODUCE 48 and IZ'ONE.
What are your thoughts on this list? A leader doesn't have to be the oldest to lead -- as long as you have the qualifications to lead and you can lead by example, anyone can be a true leader. Were you surprised by anyone on this list? Do you know any other group where the oldest member isn't the leader? Make sure to let us know in the comments below!
Seungwoo never left the group he just went on produce and became X1 right now he's enlisted in the military. While he was gone Seungsik took over and continued to stay leader. at least get that fixed.
