In the context of the controversy surrounding the so-called ‘BTS Special Military Service Act,’ which heated up the political world during his presidential campaign, Chairman Ahn said, “BTS is well qualified for alternative service.”
According to the Munhwa Ilbo coverage, Chairman Ahn and members of the Social Welfare and Culture Division of the Commission on Presidential Transition will visit the headquarters of BTS' agency, HYBE, on April 2nd.
Based on the three draft amendments to the Special Military Service Act pending in the National Assembly, the transition committee is said to have discussed intensively ways to prepare alternatives to the mandatory military service, such as serving as art and sports personnel or volunteer work, only for artists of popular culture who are recognized for their contributions on “improving national prestige.”
It is known that Chairman Ahn and the members of the subcommittee will hear their opinions on this at a meeting with HYBE officials. The transition committee explained that the BTS's military service issue and the strategy to foster the entertainment industry are key.
An official from The Commission on Presidential Transition stated, “We will discuss with HYBE based on internal discussions on BTS’s military service issue." He added, "We plan to review BTS's global performance in terms of industrial strategy, listen to the difficulties of the cultural industry, and do what we can do to support them."
