'All of Us Are Dead' director Lee Jae Gyu recently apologized for the provocative scenes that appeared in the popular Netflix series.
On February 7, Lee Jae Gyu held an online interview with various reporters and revealed his intentions behind some of the scenes depicted in the drama.
'All of Us Are Dead' has recently garnered much popularity as it ranked number 1 on Netflix's Top 10 charts in various countries around the globe. Nevertheless, it was embroiled in controversies because of the provocative scenes, such as the scene that depicts the sexual violence against a female student at the beginning of the drama. In fact, director Lee Jae Gyu was aware of the criticisms that alleged that he was overly sexualizing the female student in that scene.
However, the director explained, "There are many tragedies that happen in our society, our intention for showing such provocative scenes was not to just simply show those scenes to gain the attention of the viewers."
He continued to elaborate, "If you watch further into the drama, you can see that Eunji was afraid of having what happened to her be exposed to the public, more than losing her life. I wanted people to see how cruel what the bullies, the perpetrators, were to her."
Director Lee Jae Gyu then apologized by saying, "As a director, I apologize if the scenes were depicted as being too excessive than what I intended and also apologize for giving discomfort to anyone."
The director also discussed the public bathroom scene, where the female student gave birth to a baby and was going to abandon the baby.
He explained, "Hee-Soo's character tells the story of young single mothers who we see in real-life through the news. Initially, she did abandon the baby but went back with her heart to protect her baby. I thought that Hee-Soo returning to save the baby was in line with the overall theme of the drama."
Director Lee Jae Gyu also revealed that some scenes have been refined and explained, "There were some parts of the webtoon that might be difficult to depict through film. I thought that the drama should be easy and fun to enjoy, so there were some things that have been toned down a bit and refined to some extent. In the original work, there were more violent scenes but that's the virtue of the original work" and stressed that the violent scenes in the drama were lessened.
Meanwhile, 'All of Us Are Dead,' is gaining much attention from the globe as it adds another milestone to the K-zombie genre. The drama follows a group of high school students who survived the zombie virus outbreak at the epicenter of it all. The students must fight their way through the hoard of zombies to escape ground zero as there is no rescue coming their way.
I don't see anything wrong with it, he sending a msg out there it's the reality some people are being bullied exactly like that and it's a show for older teens and adults, very well made.
