[ALBUM & MV REVIEW] DRIPPIN - 'Villain'

AKP STAFF

[This review reflects the author's opinions and not necessarily those of allkpop.]

Track List:

1. 7Villaz

2. Villain

3. Switch

4. SHY

5. Delusion

6. Remember

DRIPPIN takes a 'sinister' turn with their 3rd mini-album, Villain. The group's new intense concept is edgy, chic, and quite appealing to the viewer due to its sleek and enchanting nature. Opening the release with a trance-inspired EDM track called "7Villaz", the instrumental is a perfect palate cleanser for the songs to follow.

The transition from "7Villaz" into the title song, "Villain," is effortless. The tracklist on this album feels well-crafted, and I firmly believe you'll find listening to it to be an auditory journey. The group proudly declares that they are 'the villain,' and the bad boy approach sells. With a funky bassline, DRIPPIN's "Villain" is a hidden gem amongst the songs from K-Pop's biggest groups. This groove continues with ultra 80s-inspired "Switch." Despite the stark change in song lyricism and feeling, the songs still feel interconnected, and the transition is seamless.

"SHY" utilizes a more instrument-driven feel rather than opting for an electronic sound. "SHY" is slightly syncopated and feels familiar, yet new. The song itself doesn't really catch my attention due to its mellow and somewhat predictable nature. However, the song is by no means a skip. Luckily for me, "Delusion" is next on the release.

"Delusion" is a power number that evokes strong emotion. Giving a dramatic performance with an impressive intensity, the group showcases their growth as a unit impeccably. Strong vocals, dynamic energy, and harmonies really bring this track to the next level.

"Remember" cleans up the album with a sweet and feel-good track. Poppy and dancey, this simple song is a nice dessert to a hearty meal. Villain is my personal favorite of DRIPPIN's work today, and a strong recommendation from me for at least one listen all the way through.

MV REVIEW

No more Mr. Nice Guy! DRIPPIN returns in their MV for "Villain" as the, well... villains! In a super extravagant sci-fi universe, the group acts as the bad guy throughout the MV. The details in the special effects really drive the point home that they didn't skimp out on the budget. Lots of CGI make "Villain" feel cinematic. The MV's sinister and dark visuals combined with DRIPPIN's hard work ethic and stage presence make this MV an excellent supplementary addition to the album as a whole. If this is the direction DRIPPIN is going, I want to see more from this underrated group.
