BTS fans have been divided over fair line distribution for J-Hope in the recent Permission To Dance stage concert in LA. But it need not be too contentious because of these ten good reasons for advocating for BTS’ choreography leader and his loyal fans.
ONE: Every artist in a group should have their own space and time to shine, and no artist should ever have their lines cut by too little. Compromising a few here and there for music’s sake is acceptable and is par for the course, like how the members decide when they record their songs.
TWO: J-Hope's lines and verses are already part of recorded songs, and it blends well with their music. We ask to remain faithful to the recorded songs because it contributes to the song more than well enough. His lines do not stick out like a sore thumb as it is made out to be.
THREE: No fan deserves to be shortchanged, blindsided, or feel any scarcity in a paid event. Hoseokies who attended the PTD LA concert risked their health and safety, went through extraordinary hurdles in purchasing concert and airline tickets, then paid a premium to experience Hobi perform what they have been following on virtual platforms for the past two years. We adore his excellence and merely wish to experience it fully. It is not much of an ask when other fandoms have yearned for – and enjoyed -- the same from their biases.
FOUR: We are not selfishly craving for J-Hope's solos except for his due spotlight within BTS songs. We are not pushing for more, just what’s his rightful time and space as accorded in recorded songs. Any fan would have wanted their bias to be given their due. Hobi, as one of the three BTS musical pillars, choreography leader, and human charger, deserves that too.
FIVE: BTS is seven. Ideally, all should take on compromises, not just one.
SIX: No fan deserves to be gaslighted and called a solo stan when…
- They also derive happiness from watching other members perform, proudly congratulating the BTS and ARMY family for the successes of their own biases, too.
- They also enjoy sharing their bias’ solo works with other members, such as Muster Soowoozoo 2021 CNS performance. It is what brotherhood is all about, after all.
- They do not pull down other BTS members or their fandoms when we appeal to give Hobi his assigned lines (and hopefully more lines).
- They remain respectable to other fandoms and biases even when other fandoms have preyed on Hobi by calling him names, to be truthful to the ARMY spirit.
SEVEN: It’s time to give back to J-Hope in the same way he pours all his heart out to ARMY. He is the most in-touch, interactive member of BTS, proven by his social media presence throughout these tough months of quarantines and lockdowns. He also comes up with performance ideas, such as the 3J sub-unit dance to Butter, to delight the ARMY. J-Hope also checks on recordings and practices in countless behind-the-scenes videos we have seen. He sets the bar. He calls ARMY iconic—and from what we know so far, no other artist in the world has definitively and explicitly put their fandom on their equal pedestal. He does not waver in his responsibility to give ARMY the best, as he said so in his interview and proven by his V-lives and the extra work in perfecting their art. J-Hope also restrains himself to blend well in group performances and is a team player through and through. He is the giver most of the time, if not all the time. It’s about time to return his overflowing love – and we can do that when we give back J-Hope his space and time to shine.
EIGHT: We wish to feel secure about future BTS concerts, to be there without feeling like we only paid to see J-Hope but not see him do what he does best. (Surely, we will feel his energy and Stage King presence. But we also want to be comforted by his soothing voice and unique rap flow. It is incomplete without these.) We want to leave concerts fully satisfied like all other fandoms.
If all six members and their fandoms could enjoy singing their songs live with their lines intact, why can’t Hobi and his loyal fans have the same in this so-called family? Why are our reasonable needs left out?
NINE: We want new followers to recognize J-Hope for his talent and hard work beyond his magnetic good looks. It’s enjoyable to gush over his perfect dancer’s physique in a sheer shirt or his unbelievable ethereal good looks. But as well all know, any BTS member is way more than that or their craziness on stage. J-Hope's most loyal fans consider his talent and overall package as rarer-than-rare flawless pink diamond. He is a consistent record-breaker and history maker, and experts hold him in the highest regard as well. Seeing his performance live and that exceptional talent unfolding right before our eyes is not unfair—it’s what we truly come and look out for!
TEN: We love J-Hope that much, period. J-Hope, BTS, and Hybe have been painfully silent throughout this contentious issue. All we have is speculation that Hobi approved of cutting down his lines, based loosely on quotes about their line distribution in recording their songs - not in the process of concerts. Unless we hear it clearly from J-Hope himself, then I do not see why we should not share what we think, feel, and expect.
We are happy for J-Hope’s happiness because that’s just really the way he is. He will love no matter what. But let us acknowledge that some fans did feel the scarcity of his lines. Let us not discredit the facts.
One thing is for sure, though. It is quite illogical for someone as generous as Hobi to shortchange his own loyal fans. He is the last person who would want to under-deliver when he is getting so much love.
J-Hope also knows the ARMYs mind and heart like the back of his hands. We have been appeasing to get him more lines, and we have also been supporting the team despite these disregarded pleas.
Hoseokies would be happy if his lines were retained, not reduced. This is not an entitlement nor a consideration, but what is due to the legend that is J-Hope and his fans. Or to any bias and their own fandoms.
j-hope's voice needs to be heard more. Out of the seven of them, he always has the least lines, and if they keep cutting it, what will be left? j-hope deserves the spotlight like what the others are getting. If he doesn't have lines, he will not be shown on that Big Screen cause that's how Bighit works, they only show who is singing. BTS is 7 if and only if everyone is getting equal screen time, until then, it's a myth
