Suga is one of the biggest stars of BTS, but before, he was a member of the famous band where he had his own short rap career.
Not everyone knows about Suga’s career before BTS, but the idol has been in the rap game for quite some time, and it wasn’t always as part of the famous boyband. As with many people who made it in the music industry, Suga had a passion for music long before anyone knew who he was.
We can thank Epik High and Stony Skunk for helping Suga fall in love with rap and hip hop. The idol has been obsessed with it since high school and has been writing lyrics since he was thirteen. By the age of seventeen, he was working in a recording studio and had debuted as a member of BTS.
Sometimes it seems like there’s not much Suga can’t do when it comes to music. He raps, produces, composes, sings, and dances – how many people can say they are that talented? Suga’s background is part of what makes him the prolific contributing member of BTS that he is today.
Soft-spoken Min Yoongi has a rather goofy background. He used to be an underground rapper under the name Gloss. Suga chose this rap name because it was pretty close to the meaning of his birth name Yoon-gi, which means “gloss” or “shine.” The hip-hop crew that Suga was a part of at the time was called D-Town. They were going around doing underground performances and celebrating the hip-hop genre.
Although D-Town is no longer together, leader Naksyeon is said to still be an active artist in Daegu, South Korea. One of the songs Gloss helped produce while he was part of D-Town is the song “518-062.”
This song is about the Gwangju uprising that took place in 1980 when student demonstrations over martial law and university closures led to a massacre. The name of the song was created by combining the date of this Pro-Democracy Movement, May 18, and the area code of Gwangju, 062. Gloss produced and composed “518-062” while leader Naksyeon-hyung nim wrote the lyrics.
Suga fondly recalls his days as Gloss and laughs that he became a part of BTS since Big Hit Entertainment told him that at first, he would only be doing composition and other production work. Little did he know that he was going to be in the spotlight of the world and ARMY.
Gloss will always live on in our memories and hearts, remembered as the one who started Min Yoongi’s legacy.
I’m so proud of Yoongi!
