On May 20, the second court hearing involving former BTOB member Ilhoon, currently facing charges for illegally purchasing and using marijuana, took place at Seoul's Central District Court.
A total of 8 defendants are undergoing trial related to this case, including the former BTOB member who previously admitted to most of his charges during his first hearing.
From July 5, 2016 through January 9, 2019, the defendants purchased approximately 820 grams of marijuana for a total amount of 133 million KRW (~ $117,000 USD), submitted in 161 payment increments. According to Ilhoon's first hearing, the former idol continued to obtain marijuana illegally on his own, using bitcoin payments and through illegal dealers.
The prosecution stated on this day, "We request for the defendant a prison sentence of 4 years, an initial fine of 133 million KRW, as well as the confiscation of any illegal material in Jung Ilhoon's possession." Regarding other defendants involved in this case, the prosecution went on to demand prison sentences ranging from 3 years to 1.5 years.
According to Ilhoon's legal representative, "He is currently reflecting deep down to his bones. He is riddled with fear while facing the first police investigation, indictment, and legal trial of his life. Because he started out in the entertainment industry at an early age, he suffered from severe stress. He tried to relieve that stress by making the wrong choice or using illegal marijuana."
The court will be reaching a decision regarding former BTOB member Ilhoon's illegal marijuana use charges soon.
Absolutely ridiculous and unjust. Rapists and murderers get lighter sentences than that in South Korea. Even drunk drivers are far more damaging to society than marijuana but those people don't even seem to be punished at all.
