KIM SEJEONG has made a long-awaited return with her latest mini-album, [I'm]. As of today, "Warning" featuring lIlBOI has been released as the title to a lovely five-song album from this multi-talented artist. allkpop spoke with SEJEONG virtually to talk about her newest release, latest inspirations, and songwriting process. Keep reading for our interview and a special message of encouragement from SEJEONG.

allkpop: Hi SE JEONG! How have you been since you’ve finished shooting your hit drama? We're excited to speak with you about your latest release!

안녕하세요 김세정님, 히트 드라마 <경이로운 소문> 이 끝내셨는데 그동안 어떻게 지내셨나요? 최신 발매 앨범에 대해 인터뷰할 수 있어서 너무 기쁩니다!

세정: 저도 이렇게 인터뷰에 응할 수 있게 되어 기쁩니다. <경이로운 소문>이 끝나고 충분한 휴식기를 가지면서 작업에 몰두했습니다. 그 사이 작업한 곡들이나 추가로 더 많은 곡들을 쓰고 정리하면서 아이디어들을 모아 앨범으로 정리해 보았는데요. 그렇게 앨범 준비를 하면서 연기에 대한 공허한 부분도 잘 채워진 것 같습니다.

KIM SEJEONG: I am also very happy to have this interview with allkpop. Since I finished I have committed myself to working on my music. I have organized the songs I have previously written and songs I wrote additionally and organized them into an album. I think it allowed me to fill the emptiness from acting as I prepared for the album.

allkpop: Share a little about the process and concept for your latest comeback with your new mini-album [I’m]! How did recording this album go?

이번 컴백 앨범 [I’m] 컨셉과 만들어진 과정을 설명해 주세요! 앨범 녹음은 어땠나요?

세정: 이번 앨범 컨셉은 다이어리입니다. 사람은 누구나 보여지고 싶은 모습들이 있지만 본인만의 일기장에서만큼은 솔직한 마음을 표현하기에 이번 앨범에서 담고자 하는 메시지도 솔직하게 담고자 노력했지만 이번 앨범을 마주하는 대중분들의 입장에서도 솔직한 자기 자신의 모습을 그렸으면 하는 마음에 다이어리 컨셉으로 돌아왔습니다. 이번 앨범은 전곡 작사 작곡에 참여하게 되어 녹음할 때도 여러 창법과 소리들로 장르를 넓혀 녹음하고 싶어 다양한 도전을 해보았습니다.
KIM SEJEONG: The concept of the album is a diary. Everyone has appearances they want to show to the public, but in a diary, people express their true feelings. So, I put effort into an honest message in this album. I have come back with the concept of a diary as I wished for the public audience who would engage this album to picture their honest selves. I have participated in lyric writing and music composition for all songs in this album and as I wanted to broaden my genre with different singing methods and sounds while recording, I have tried various things.

allkpop: The title of the mini-album is [I’m]. Is there any meaning behind the title of the album? How did you come to choose the title?

이번 미니 앨범 제목은 [I’m]인데요. 앨범명의 어떤 뜻이 있나요? 앨범명을 어떻게 짓게 되셨나요?

세정: 처음에는 앨범명이 [I]였습니다. 한국어로 하면 ‘I’는 ‘나’ 뿐만 아니라 ‘아이’라는 뜻도 가지고 있는데 어린시절부터 지금까지의 내가 어떻게 성장하였는지 어떻게 위로해 왔는지에 대해 조금 더 솔직하게 담아보고 싶었습니다.

KIM SEJEONG: Initially, the title of the album was [I]. In Korean “I” means “me” and can be perceived as “child”. I wanted to contain with honesty, how I grew up to be the person I am now and how I have comforted myself.

allkpop: Tell us about your title track, ’Warning’. What is the song about and what inspired you to write this single?

이번 타이틀 곡 ‘Warning’의 대해 설명해 주세요. 이번 곡은 어떤 주제이고 어떤 영감을 받아 이 곡을 쓰게 되었나요?

세정: 이번 타이틀 곡 ‘Warning’은 “쉬어도 돼 괜찮아” 라는 메시지를 담고 있습니다. 무책임하게 쉬라는 뜻이 아닌 정말 쉴 틈 없이 본인을 망가트려가며 달려온 이들에게 쉼도 하나의 걸음이라는 것 이쯤이면 잠시 쉬어도 된다고 경고해주고 싶었습니다. 정말 쉬어야 할 때 쉬지 못한다면 터져 버리고 맙니다. 특히 요즘 시기에는 힘든 상황과 함께 스트레스가 해소되지 못하고 쌓이는 경우가 많은 것 같아 지금이 위기인 사람들이 생각보다 많은 것 같습니다. 그분들께 경고와 같은 위로의 메시지를 전하고 싶었습니다.

KIM SEJEONG: The title song ‘Warning’ has the message “You can take a break. It’s okay”. It doesn’t mean to take a break irresponsibly. I wanted to warn those who have been running restlessly and destroying themselves that taking a break is another step and that it’s okay to take a short break. If you don’t rest when you need to, you would burst. I think there are many people who are in danger as there are many cases of accumulating stress rather than relieving them, especially with the current situation. I wanted to convey a comforting and warning message to them.

allkpop: What do you hope fans will take away from ‘Warning’ and [I’m]?

이번 앨범 [I’m]과 타이틀 곡 ‘Warning’을 통해 팬 분들이 무엇을 얻었으면 좋겠나요?

세정:이번 앨범 [I’m]을 통해 여러분이 잠시 본인을 돌아볼 수 있는 시간이 되었으면 좋겠고 잘 해왔다고 앞으로도 잘 할 거라고 토닥여줄 수 있는 위로가 되었으면 좋겠습니다.

KIM SEJEONG: I hope through this album [I’m] you can have a time of looking back on yourself and I hope it can approach you as a comfort acknowledging you’ve been doing well and that you will do excellent in the days to come.

allkpop: What music have you been listening to lately? What songs inspire you the most?

최근 어떤 음악을 많이 들으셨나요? 어떤 곡들이 김세정님에게 영감을 가장 많이 주나요?

세정: 최근에는 장르, 아티스트, 국경 상관없이 그날의 주제를 정해두고 주제에 맞는 무드나, 가사, 톤 등이 맞으면 플레이 리스트에 넣어 감상했습니다. 세상 모든 곡들은 저에게 자극을 주는 것 같습니다.

KIM SEJEONG: Recently, regardless of genre, artist, and country, I’ve been choosing a topic of the day and add songs to my playlist as long as it matched the mood, lyrics, and tone of the topic and would listen to them. I think all songs in the world inspire me.
