Note: I had saved the original Nate Pann post (December 6, 2020) to translate the thread but had no time to do so until today. The OP removed the post on Nate Pann, so I will post it now in short. (There is a screenshot of the thread in this post).
After MAMA, a netizen posted a thread. It claimed that it was not fair that the performance category winner was determined by fan votes, which is not fair against Seventeen, who had the best performance but fewer fan votes and album sales.
The netizens also expressed their dissatisfaction in award show criteria that the winners are determined with similar stats, making only 1 artist win the most categories as a result.
-->So, in my opinion, every fan must have thought about this at least once. There were only 2 categories that fans were influential on in the past, and they were called "Netizens' Choice" and "Overseas Fans' Choice." For 2 weeks or a month, voting would be open, and a fan could cast only 1 vote during the period. For instance, "Song of the year" used to be chosen by the judges+digital charts (non-stop streaming wasn't possible then). "Artist of the year" was chosen by the judges. "Album of the year" was chosen by the judges(quality)+album sales. Also, there weren't so many categories like today. So, most of the awards went to different artists.
However, the system used in place now, which was implemented over the last few years, is completely different. There are so many categories. Fans have an influence on every category. What's worse, the award shows make fans cast unlimited votes. Some of them make fans download apps and watch ads, give them requests, and let them vote. Fans vote in the day and night non-stop. Is this the right way to determine the winner? If a fan votes for artist "A" in the song category, would he/she vote for "B" in the artist category, and for "C" in the performance category?
Not every artist's fans are well organized or have time for mass voting non-stop all day. Also, not every fan wants to vote. Especially older fans. But is it the only absurd thing? For instance, the performance award criteria were judge+album sales+fan votes+song. Aside from the judges, what album sales, fan votes, and song have to do with the performance award?
Most of the netizens agreed with the OP and commented,
-Seventeen deserved to win.
-What if my idol has the best performance but not popular enough?
-Honestly, NCT and Seventeen deserved the performance award.
-The award criteria is weird.
Well, this is not about only MAMA but nearly every award show in Korea. What's your opinion, AKP community?
