Golden Disc Awards is known to be one of the most reliable award shows in Korea. However their voting system for Chinese users doesn't seem to be fair to some artists.
As you may know, Golden Disc Awards will award a Korean artist based on Chinese fans' votes and the voting is being conducted through Chinese music streaming service NetEase Cloud Music, just like the last year.
QQ Music is the biggest streaming service in China. Almost every K-Pop entertainment company partnered with them. The question is why GDA chose NetEase.
You have to pay to get a membership to access the artists' albums and songs. In conclusion, Big Hit, Cube and Pledis Entertainment groups' fans already have a membership to NetEase Cloud Music, which is GDA's partner. On the other part SM, YG, Starship, Woollim and more companies' groups' have a membership to QQ Music.
Here is thedistribution in 2019
QQ, KuGou and Kuwo belong to Tencent music.
These are the music streaming services and the companies partnered with them.
QQ Music
YG
SM
Stone
FNC
Starship
Woollim
Fantagio
DSP and more
NetEase
Big Hit
Cube Entertainment
Pledis Entertainment
Here is the unfairness about that: While fans who have no membership to NetEase are able to vote only twice a day, fans who have membership to NetEase are able to vote 8 times a day. This means GDA favors a few groups, and puts a lot of groups in a disadvantage.
Now you might wonder why Super Junior is ranked 2nd even though their fandom don't use NetEase Music. Because Super Junior has a very big fandom and they are united well when it comes to online votings. So, imagine how many votes Super Junior woud get if their fandom were able to vote 8 times a day.
Also now you might wonder where EXO is.
GDA partnered with NetEase for China popularity voting last year too and the conditions were the same. EXO and BTS were tied at 1st place and then EXO-L's were accused of cheating. Later it was proved that the cheaters were not EXO-L's and EXO was robbed off the popularity award.
This is why Chinese EXO-L's gave up voting in the beginning and EXO, who has one of the biggest fandoms in China is ranked at 17.
The voting should have been conducted through a portal such as Weibo where all groups' have equal rights to vote. Early this year, Weibo conducted a K-Pop group popularity voting. The ranking went like: EXO, Super Junior, TVXQ, BIGBANG, SHINHWA...
