On January 5, Big Hit Entertainment issued an official warning to fans regarding a magazine aiming to distribute a special issue focussed on BTS, without the company's consent.
The label stated, "Yesterday (January 4), we confirmed a special edition of 'Star Focus' up for presale on Kyobo Books, Aladdin, and Yes24, including items such as a BTS photobook, DVD, photocards, and more. This magazine's publishing company did not request legal rights to use BTS's images or names with our company beforehand, and they are currently violating our artist's personality rights and usage rights."
The label went on to reveal that 'Star Focus' magazine's distributor MGM Media LTD previously faced legal investigation for another case of usage rights violation in November of 2018, as the magazine attempted to sell another special issue featuring the "history of BTS". During this investigation and trial, the court ruled that if MGM Media LTD violates such rules again, they must pay a fine of 20,000,000 KRW (~ 18,000 USD) per day for each day that the magazine attempted to distribute contents related to BTS illegally.
As a result, Big Hit accused MGM Media LTD of "ignoring the court's decision", and also added, "Recently, we have recognized the constant, illegal usage of our artists' images and usage rights for distribution of various contents as profit, as a serious issue. We have established a department specifically in order to protect our artists' rights, and we well put to use all legal aid both within our company as well as through external sources to ensure the protection of our artists' rights."
Finally, Big Hit warned fans, "Please be cautious in purchasing publications and contents which violate our artists' personality rights."
It's still early in 2019 and yet Big Hit's legal team are already busy... well between suing antis on the internet and this.
