TRIPLE H RETRO FUTURISM
Track List:
1. Feel
2. RETRO FUTURE *Title
3. Show ME
4. RETRO FUTURE (Inst.)
Triple H is coming your way again, this time with the single album 'Retro Futurism.' They made a splash last year with '199X,' and now they're going back to the future with this release.
It kicks off with "Feel." It's not a bad tune, but it's a bit repetitive. There could have been more going on, but a lot of this song just felt like so much filler. The title track "RETRO FUTURE" is so much more filled out, with interesting synth lines, and much more of an even line distribution. It's hip-hop during the main verses which hit the right chords with me. It's also catchy as all get out.
"Show ME" is lighter fare, it's sort of a soft pop song. It limits the rapping to a couple segments here and there, and they're not jarring, despite the softer melody. It's a pretty, refreshing tune, and a nice comedown from the faster tempos of the first two tracks.
To clarify, "Feel" isn't terrible, it's just that the chorus wears thin after a bit. It's a decent party tune, especially if you have it on in the background. The rest of the songs are a little different from what we might expect from Triple H, but not too much. I like the hip-hop influences, and they're a pretty fun band overall. And really, what more can you want?
The members of Triple H attend one wild party in the MV for "RETRO FUTURE." There's everything from wall to wall attendees, being submerged in water, orgies, drinking, and dancing on the bed. As if that wasn't enough, one of 'em is on the toilet for part of the video.
There's not much retro or future here, as it resembles every other wild party in the history of partying. There's also very little dancing, per se, or at least anything that required choreo (storyboards, possibly, but not choreography).
As an MV it succeeds, largely because of the stylized representations of the action, not to mention the WTF moments that are never adequately explained. There is a sort of voyeuristic vibe like we're looking at them partying and we're supposed to -- even closing the curtain to the toilet is an afterthought. And there's also a raunchy aspect to it, that flashes onscreen and off again before you can process much of it.
I liked it. Fight me.
