SEE ALSO: Han Ye Seul focuses on rebuilding her career amid evolving public perceptions
It was recently revealed that the actress was a victim of medical malpractice which occurred while getting a lipoma removed, with her agency KeyEast Entertainment confirming the news to be true. Since then, fans and the general public have been outraged, demanding an apology and explanation as to why and what had happened.
On April 21, an interview was uploaded via YouTube between a medical journalist, Hong Hye Gul, and the person who performed the operation on the actress, a surgeon specializing at the Gangnam CHA Hospital, Professor Lee Ji Hyun.
Lee Ji Hyun started with how Han Ye Seul first arrived at the specific hospital, "I don't know the details but it seemed that she was recommended to come see me by Gangnam Chaum." He continued, "Her surgery took place on April 2nd but she came to see me the first time a week prior. [At the time] I told her there's a problem with having a wound/scar on the surgical site and since she's an actress, I asked her to inquire about plastic surgery that will cause less scarring. Afterward, she left and on her second visit, she came to receive her surgery."
According to the interview, the size of the lipoma was approximately 5-8cm but the specific location could not be revealed. The doctor explained that the lipoma was placed larger than the top scar shown in Han Ye Seul's SNS photo. "It's much easier to remove the tumor if done so from above but because she's an actress and in an attempt to hide the scar as much as possible, the surgery took place from below," Lee Ji Hyun said, indicating the scar could be covered up with clothing if done so from below.
The method of the surgery required Professor Lee Ji Hyun to strip/exfoliate the lipoma while an assistant pulled the skin. However, while stripping/exfoliating with an electric knife, the accident transpired as the knife cut through the skin from inside out.
The lipoma was first removed with the skin still having a hole and the skin that was attached to the lipoma had to be peeled off separately and sutured.
The professor emphasized that he did not implant tissues of a skin from other parts of the body or a cadaver, contrary to some suspicions.
Additionally, he confessed that he admitted his fault to the guardian(s) of Han Ye Seul as well as Han Ye Seul herself on the day of the operation. According to the interview, Lee Ji Hyun has now removed all of the threads/stitches in the lower surgery area and the stitched skin has survived. However, the doctor stated that she (Han Ye Seul) has been transferred to a specialized hospital for rehabilitation of burned skin(s) and is going to be in the process of healing.
Professor Lee Ji Hyun ended by acknowledging his error and apologized to the actress, "I made a wrong decision. I'm very sorry. I would like to apologize to Han Ye Seul once more."
