A former South Korean model sued Asiana airlines after enduring ramen burns on her body. Her identity was not revealed but was simply referred to as 'Miss Jang' in the original source.
The 14-party Seoul Eastern District Court held a joint appeal against Asiana Airlines and its crew member, Kang Hwa-seok, on January 17, and ruled, "The defendant must compensate 196,200,000 KRW (183,278 USD) to the plaintiff."
On March 17, 2014, Miss Jang, who identified to be a former model, was in a business class of an Asiana Airlines flight from Incheon to Paris. During the flight, a stewardess spilled hot ramen on her lap, leading to a severe burn. Miss Jang then sued the airline and requested 200 million KRW (187,000 USD) for the 2 to 3-degree burn on her lower abdomen to the thighs.
Miss Jang claims she asked if there was a doctor on the plane, but the airline declined her request and only provided minimal medical supplies and care. According to Miss Jang, she had to withstand the pain with only a gauze and Tylenol until they arrived in Paris.
Miss Jang stated, "Even after years of skin transplant surgery, I cannot fully recover. The burn to the core is also affecting my relationship with my husband. I was also told that it can cause danger if I get pregnant."
On the other hand, Asiana Airlines claimed, "Miss Jang accidentally knocked over a tray of ramen dishes. We took emergent care as directed by a doctor on the plane."
