On September 12, the grandfather of 8-year-old girl 'A' and 9-year-old boy 'B' called the community center for help after discovering the shocking living conditions of his grandchildren.
The two young siblings lived in a small rental house with two bedrooms, a living room, and a bathroom in the city of Suwon.
The house was filled with trash, rotten food, as well as bugs. The police who arrived at the site explained, "Every part of the house was filled with trash except for the area where the kids laid down. The smell was awful. It's not a livable environment."
A and B also revealed to be suffering from poor health conditions. Both children have many cavities and B is also in need of ophthalmic treatment.
Meanwhile, the mother of the siblings identified as 'C' remains unreachable.
It's reported the mother took care of the children on her own in the rental house for about 2 years without having a job since her divorce. The siblings lived with her on weekdays and were sent to their grandfather's home for the weekend.
The grandfather was unaware of the dire living environment as C would not allow him to come into their home. However, he was able to find out about the situation when the siblings were locked out of the house on the 12th.
The children called their grandfather for help when their mother didn't open the door for them. With a found spare key, the grandfather let the children in and also discovered the trash-filled home.
The employees of the community center judged cleaning up the place was the first and foremost action to take. The total amount of waste including trash, recyclables, damaged flooring, wallpaper, etc. equaled 5 tons.
The community center will work with child protection services to provide proper treatment for the siblings. Currently, A and B are living with their grandfather while the police investigate the mother.
