The statue appears to somewhat resemble ice skating queen Kim Yuna (or perhaps Elsa from 'Frozen') wearing a blue dress, sparking much attention.
Various online community boards are buzzing about the overall quality of the statue, criticizing it for its substantially low quality. Specifically, the poor facial features/expressions, as well as the ambiguity of the 'broken or cracking of ice' at the bottom of the statue, leading many to wonder what the whole concept was about.
Upon witnessing this, netizens are rather appalled by the unsettling situation and expressed their rage as to even think about erecting such an offensive object for the entire world to see and demanded it to be taken down immediately.
A representative of Gangwon Province who assisted in displaying the figurine explained, "We decided to establish the statue to promote for the upcoming Pyeongchang Olympics. It does not take after professional athlete Kim Yuna. If the statue had been created to look like her, copyright and portrait rights would have to be taken care of beforehand, so we decided not to model after Kim Yuna."
In response to this, netizens are fuming due to their belief that the statue had been modeled after none other than Kim Yuna. They pointed out the similar gestures and the iconic blue dress the gold medalist had worn at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and deemed the representative was lying.
While all of this is going on, a representative at the Incheon International Airport mentioned, "Gangwon Province made the request first to put the statue up in order to promote the upcoming winter games. The statue will continue to be on display until the end of the Olympics next year."
