On the July 12 airing of 'Lee Kuk Ju's Young Street', Tony An said, "I had a shy personality so I didn't know I'll become a singer. I've always had a dream since I was young but becoming a singer was just a fantasy. At the time, a Korean idol group named IDOL released "Bow Wow" with members from the United States and they looked cool. I was looking at job listings and came across an ad for SM auditions. Shinhwa's Andy and I made it on the auditions."

Tony An continued, "I was always curious as to why I was chosen for SM because I didn't have many talents. So I asked CEO Lee Soo Man at the company's 10 year anniversary event. He responded with one word and that was 'battery.'"
He explained, "At the time, the audition took place late at night and the music suddenly stopped during my audition because the battery ran out. So I went out and searched for batteries for 20~30 minutes. From seeing that, he thought I would be a hard worker. I was shocked to find out that it wasn't dancing or singing but batteries that have changed my life. You never know when you'll be given an opportunity so I always try to live my best."
