According to police officials on January 29, a man was found dead at 9:40am on January 28 in Uijeongbu city.

The man's nephew had brought over the traditional Lunar New Year dish of rice cake soup when he found his uncle's unconscious body on the floor and called the police.

It appeared the man had fallen asleep on the living room floor after drinking the night before and died of hypothermia.  On this day, the temperature in the Uijeongbu area had dropped to -11.3 Celsius (11.66 degrees Fahrenheit).

The police stated that the man had been going through some hardships while living alone since his mother had passed away in 2013.

On the day of the incident, the coal briquette heating vent at his home had stopped functioning, causing the gas to go out as well.

Although the electric heating pad was the only source of warmth, it wasn't enough to sustain body heat for long.
