Parents of middle school students who caused a fire in a 16-story building may have to pay for the damages.
The building in Gimhae was set ablaze on December 7. The 13th-floor and the 3 floors above were burned down. The fire was caused by six middle school students who were playing with a lighter. The students confessed that one of them said, "Let's set something on fire." and they proceeded to light a couch on fire. Fortunately, the 3 floors that suffered the most damage did not have any stores, so no one was seriously injured.
However, the floor immediately below received structural damages totaling around 140,000,000 KRW ($119,399 USD). The students will receive a criminal penalty, but the parents are the ones who will be responsible in civil court. The owners are reportedly preparing to take legal action through a lawsuit.
