At the end of October, approximately 200 EXO fans gathered to take part in a scene of 'Star In the Universe'. According to the fans who were at the set, they arrived at 5 p.m. and stayed overnight through the cold weather for filming. It's also stated that the drama staff was incredibly rude, yelling directions, and treating the young fans harshly. To make matters worse, it's claimed that none of the fans received pay because the producer automatically assumed that their chance of working with an EXO member is an incentive itself.
Angered fans shared the terrible experience on online communities, and Kim Ji Hyun PD responded to their complaints with an apology on November 10. Kim PD wrote on her Instagram,
"Hello, this is producer Kim Ji Hyun of 'Star in the Universe'. The responsibility of the drama set is on me, therefore, I want to sincerely apologize to the fans of actor Kim Joon Myun (Suho). I apologize for the actions and behaviors of the staff members in our team. The fault is heavy on me who couldn't be cautious of the sets where you came to give help. First, I want to apologize to the fans who might have been hurt. I am deeply sorry. I will contact the participants in the filming and will take responsibility in any method I can. The drama, 'Star In the Universe', has the theme of respecting fandoms. The drama was written and made through a long time of carefully considering the hearts of each and every fan. If the precious hearts have been hurt, then I no longer have a reason to work on the drama. Actor Kim Joon Myun gave his best for the drama and was an actor who received the greatest love from the staff on the set. I, too, treat him with adoration and worked in the drama. We are trying our best to deliver the drama like a present. I apologize once more on behalf of the producers and staff."
