On September 12, South Korea suffered from the biggest earthquake in the country's recorded history, affecting regions around Gyeongju. Despite the fact that the earthquake did not cause any serious damage, aside from two minor injuries, a few BTS fans' activities online regarding the disaster have become the cause of some controversy.

Netizens noticed that around 9PM (KST), one of the trending posts on a popular internet cafe platform read, "Of course, because its Rap Monster's birthday, there's an earthquake. Definitely the god of destruction...." Furthermore, fans took to Twitter to trend similar jokes, saying, "The reason that an earthquake occurred today is because today is god of destruction's birthday so the earth is celebrating it" and replying, "Ah it's oppa's earthquake!!!!", "Even the ground is dancing because its happy", and more.
Netizens, as well as ARMY who disagree with some of the fans in question, have been expressing shock and disdain toward these jokes, with comments like, "Aigoo, I'm here worrying about my grandmother... what is this...", "This is just defaming Rap Monster's image", "Wow.. Seriously why do they do this.. stop", "I'm a BTS fan but this is not okay. I was seriously so scared", and more.
