Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) revealed on June 23 that they have arrested 50-year-old woman Park without a warrant for charges of murdering her mother's friend then tampering with evidence by burning the corpse.
According to police, this past June 16, Park strangled to death her mother's 78-year-old friend who lived alone in a multiplex building in Jungnang District.
The landlord noted that one of the rooms was eerily quiet, and proceeded to check the room for any signs of life only to find the lifeless body of the tenant. After discovering the corpse of the 78-year-old woman, the landlord reportedly dialed the authorities straightaway.
Police found that the woman stayed for a brief period with Park's family back in February and that after Park committed the murder, she took around 190,000 KRW (~$162 USD) worth of cash. Further, police speculate that Park burned the corpse to rid of any evidence of her crime; however, Park is allegedly only admitting to the charges of murder and robbery.
Police are investigating whether Park murdered the woman to steal money or if the killing was merely an accident.
