The unidentified woman had bought the newborn boy from his mother at Daejeon Hospital nearly one year ago on May 18, 2015.
The mother, a 28-year-old woman, had created an online post to sell her baby to a sterile couple, and connected with the 42-year-old who was interested in buying her son. The baby was reportedly born out of wedlock from an extramarital affair the 28-year-old had with another man.

While the courts sentenced the 42-year-old woman to three years in prison, they were more lenient in their ruling toward the mother, sentencing her to a 10-month prison term and 80 hours of community service.
According to The Korea Times, the courts had reasoned, "Although her act deserved condemnation for failing to show a minimal level of responsibility, we considered that she admitted to the crime and showed remorse."
