This is Way Back Wednesday where we feature a blast from the past.
Nostalgia is a funny thing, you can hear an old song come and think to yourself, "Man things were much better back then." Thinking fondly of a simpler time to briefly get away from the fast paced environment we're in today. This feeling came over me during a recent late night YouTube browsing session and I came across this:
I watched the video from 2003 (incorrectly labeled as 1999) with a smile on my face and said, "Whatever happened to the close knit YG family?" You had the mastermind talented producer / rapper in Perry, 1TYM with a raw Teddy who was just discovering his dormant producing powers, the sexy Lexy who just made her debut, and Jinusean. Hell, even YG himself got in on the act (check out the video above).
Many of you reading this don't know about the good old days as you were too young (or not even born) to consume old school K-pop but I kind of miss it. The YG Family these days seems a bit discombobulated, you don't really see the tight-knit family kin relationship with Big Bang, 2NE1, WINNER, PSY, iKON, Akdong Musician, Lee Hi, Epik High, etc. It's a different time now, things evolve, it's easier when things were small but now you're a big corporation and priorities change. This was put into clear focus when Minzy left 2NE1, a tight-knit family doesn't have a family member wanting to leave. It's sad but that's just the way it is.
I could go on and on but I don't want to turn this into an OP-ED, so I'll end it with this. YG faces a bit of a dilemma now with Big Bang going to the army, member changes in 2NE1... who will carry the torch for the next generation? Like waiting for George RR Martin to finish up 'A song of Ice and Fire,' only time will tell. Thanks to video though we can always reminisce on the past and not just on Wednesday's.
