MINTTY - "ALREADY GO LADY"
Tracklist:
1. Already Go Lady
2. True Love
Former Tiny-G member Mint (now going by "Mintty") has dropped her new solo single, "Already Go Lady." Best known as a member of that group of diminutive girls, the teeny Thai is back with two brand new songs.
In "Already Go Lady," Mintty has a message for anyone who might try to attract the eye of her man: back off. Mirroring her role in her former girl group, she spits and flows her way through the main verses, backed by a loud, piping synth. Still, despite the rapping, there are definitely melodious parts that sound very much like Tiny-G, including the staccato parts. Special attention should be given to the beginning -- she's trying to say "clap," but instead ends up with one of the more amusing English fails in a K-Pop song (and repeats it, for more hilarity). While not original, it's still a fun listen. Bright, cute, and crazy catchy, I like it.
The next track on this single is "True Love," which has a retro feel to it with the horns and bass. Kind of a jazzy R&B number. Mintty doesn't do a half bad job with it, though her pipes aren't really meant for the lazy, laid-back feel of the tune. She croons for all she's worth, but it's painfully obvious she can't hold a note, so the vocals come off as choppy and amateurish. As a song, it's just sort of "meh."
The first one is fun, but the second not so much. I'm not sure if it's because of her ability as a solo artist, or whether they gave her a song that didn't play to her strengths. It's not bad for a single, even if the B-side was less than stellar. I think if she sticks to dance tunes, she'll do okay.
MV REVIEW
In a rundown part of South Korea that doesn't exist, complete with road signs in English mounted on a fence, police tape that doesn't actually cordon off anything, and doubtless one of the hottest wanted posters ever, we're invited to a block party with the singer as the main attraction. There we're treated to her singing in a shopping cart, singing and dancing in a garage, tagging an oil barrel, and flashing faux gang signs.
There's some dancing but we only get the barest hint of choreo. Most of the time we get some sexy dancing, some moves that don't get enough screen time, and there's even some b-boying in here, to amp up the excitement. The sad thing is Mintty does not get any cool moves; no cartwheels, downrock, or windmills for her.
Not Mintty :(
If this is meant to be a reboot, I'm not sure it really succeeded. We still have a cute singer (a little older to be sure), still decked out in feminine hip hop attire and a spunky attitude. So what has changed? She's still the same Mint we've always known. She has slightly more daring attire in some scenes, but not to a large extent. Sexy concept? Bah. Where's the b-girling? She doesn't need a new image. She needs a company that will promote her properly.
