BERNARD PARK, LIM - "WITH YOU"
Singer Bernard Park teams up with Lim of the Wonder Girls and releases a new single and MV, "With You." He has one EP under his belt already, as well as another collaboration with J.Y. Park himself and 15&'s Park Ji Min. Lim probably needs no introduction as part of veteran k-pop band Wonder Girls.
The song is sort of a folk song with some pop sensibilities. Primarily done to acoustic guitar, eventually it acquires a gentle string section. Bernard's voice is quite high here, but not Eric Nam high. There's sort of rawness to his voice that lends it an air of honesty. Sadly, Lim has little to do in the song. She does a too-short rap in the middle, and then parrots some of the main chorus at the end, but ultimately she was underused here. She did a good job with what she was given, but I was still disappointed. The song is an ode to his girlfriend.
"With You" is a good, bright springtime tune, given a good tempo for including on a player next to the ice chest. I can see why they gave a road trip theme to the MV. It's a sweet, mid-tempo love song, a jaunty tune, and just an overall great listen.
MV REVIEW
Bernard Park and Lim take a road trip in "With You."
And not only is it a road trip, it's told partly from the point of view of a jerky cameras wielded by Park and Lim, as they attempt to film their adventure. Obviously, we know this is just trickery, as the makers knew exactly what they were doing and doubtless applied filters and such to make it appear spontaneous, but it's a fun conceit nonetheless. The other part is pure MV happiness with animations and cute moments.
We do get generous shots of scenery and of the pair -- they play a young couple in love -- and fun shots with the friends who went camping with them. It's fun to see the looks on Lim's face; she looks like she's having the time of her life, and gives good drama. They are on a bike together, he plays songs that they sing to, they dangle their feet off of a dock and just look natural.
I like these kinds of things -- I really never get tired of seeing them. Maybe because it's vicarious, maybe because I just enjoy seeing a couple in love and happy. Whatever the reason, this gets my thumbs up.
