Although "I Miss You" doesn't stray far from its monotonous instrumental, the piano is melodic and is a staple throughout the song as it scales between various ups and downs. You can even catch small instances of an organ adding to the song's rich style. The heart-beating drums and low, rich tones also trigger up a more sensational instrumental that helps the song splash into your mind! These elements combined make this song an addiction, and MAMAMOO's voices pure ecstasy! I like how throughout MAMAMOO's chorus and bridge the words "So Much I Miss You" and "You, You, You, You, You" is repetitiously added! Like the frosting of cake, it is there in every bite and makes the song even more delicious!
I further enjoy how this song implements a heartbeat pace; it is slow and steady and injects the heartfelt lyrics straight into your feelings. Solar effortlessly, and exceptionally, wails the notes in a way that it doesn't sound like a strained scream but rather captures the hopeless yell you can only let out from grieving emotions that are untouched and sincere. Yet "I Miss You" is clearly Hwa Sa's vocal moment to shine, and she took it by the reigns! I love the harmonic blend with their vocals but I adore Hwa Sa's ability to carry her notes like a gentle breeze in the wind even more! It keeps going steadily without any interruptions. Hwa Sa can also push strength and gusto into her voice that not many singers can easily do! Although I usually enjoy Moon Byul's raps, I felt she couldn't express her sassy nature usually found in her more than playful raps. It reminded me of most K-Pop girl group raps that are simply additives for the member's sake rather than a complement to the song entirely. Solar and Whee In's voices are beautifully intertwined that it almost becomes hard to differentiate between the two since Hwa Sa and Moon Byul have more distinct sounds. Both Solar and Whee In are able to carry a polished voice alongside the lyrics in each verse which is what helps Hwa Sa's low toned whispers frolic alongside the soulful R&B instrumental.
The lyrics aren't anything too out of the ordinary, but that is what makes it best! It isn't complicated and painted with metaphors and suffocated by anything pretentious. The words like "When I see a good movie, I miss you" and "Tonight I go to bed with a box of tissues instead of you" are straightforward and keep to the feelings that surface during such broken times of heartache. I am in love with the emphasis on certain lyrics like "So much"; it brings attention to its powerful meaning when it is gently carried into the track and suddenly cut off. The song is easy to hum and will become a must-have on anyone's Karaoke list! Check out the teaser below and indulge your sense!
In the end, "I Miss You" offers so much more than just a quick single can provide. The song is something I can find easily incorporated into soundtracks from movies like 'Dream Girls,' and I hope MAMAMOO do more with this masterpiece than simply leave it to rest as a single. It makes your crave more but it is a torture to not see it fully blossom into something bigger than just a track, so let's hope it keeps climbing the charts!
