North Korea is causing some commotion right now, because on Wednesday, the country claimed to have carried out its very first hydrogen bomb test.
A North Korean broadcast proudly announced the news, which took place in the northern area of the country, near the Punggye-ri nuclear testing facility. It had a magnitude tremor of 5.1
Although experts say that it may not have been a hydrogen bomb after all but was reported as such for propaganda. Nuclear proliferation expert Karl Dewey stated that North Korea is likely unable to produce lithium deuteride, which is necessary to make a hydrogen bomb.
He says that it was more likely a 'boosted fission weapon', which is a hybrid of a hydrogen bomb and the regular plutonium bomb.
Nothing is confirmed so far, but South Korea has revealed that no radiation has been detected, which makes it even less likely that it was a hydrogen bomb. Even so, it's still a big advance on North Korea's nuclear development.
