REPLY 1988 - EPISODE 20 (FINALE)
We've finally reached the end and we must say goodbye to 'Reply 1988'. Goodbye to Bora, Sun Woo, Jung Hwan, Jung Bong, Taek, Deok Seon, Mi Ok, and Dong Ryong. Goodbye to their parents and all the characters who carved out a place in our hearts.
Sun Woo and Bora finally get married, after fighting off objections from the moms, whose only reason is that they have the same surname. Apparently, marrying someone with the same surname in Korea was somewhat taboo, to avoid confusion between clans. The wedding is what brought on the tear ducts, with the interplay between her, Deok Seon, and Dad, playing my heartstrings like a virtuoso. Jung Bong quits law, and gets a job at a local bar, which he feng shuis into a successful cooking show (apparently he makes a mean course of ramen). Deok Seon and Taek are now an item, but everyone has to learn about it through the tabloids. We see their relationship develop through vignettes both cute and stormy.
In the present, Deok Seon visits the empty street where they all once lived as all the families have moved away. In her memories she sits down with her friends, all of them as young as in Ep 1, and watches a movie, until the moms call everyone home for dinner. She realizes that, truly, you can't recapture the old days, that things change over the course of time. Deok Seon doesn't miss her youth, she misses the youth of those she loves. She says a belated goodbye to the street and her childhood...
Alright. I think my tear ducts stopped working. I'm all cried out. There were a couple funny sequences, but ultimately this was very poignant and heart-rending finale. I loved that Sun Woo and Bora finally had their time together, that Taek and Doek Seon were together, so were Mi Ok and Jung Bong, and that was the way it was supposed to be.The only thing I have an issue with is Jung Hwan. Where was his story? He was notably in very few scenes here, and we don't find out what the future holds for him. Or Dong Ryong, for that matter. I would have loved an extra few minutes, telling us what happens to them. Throw us a bone and tell us they met their wives at one of Dong Ryong's restaurants and the rest is history. Ah well, I guess there's always fanfic.
I just want to take a moment to thank all the actors who put so much work into this drama. You guys did a fantastic job of bringing back nostalgia and making that time feel so real. If this doesn't catapult everyone to super-stardom, I couldn't begin to guess why. They were able to make me laugh and cry, and that's rare. Usually someone shines at comedy or pathos, but not both. Even Hyeri did a great job here, for those of you worried about an untried idol actress.
I particularly grew close to the family dynamics. I like how, while there was romance, it often took a backseat to the way the sons and daughters interacted with their fathers and mothers, or how the siblings bounced off each other. It was a great thing to see the interactions between Taek and his dad, Sun Woo and his mom, Jung Hwan and his parents. And it was wonderful how they took these people into account each and every day, trying to make their family life better. I love that about the show, and that's what helped this drama find its way into my heart.
Sitting down (or sometimes laying down) to watch this was one of the highlights of the week. It was sometimes noisy and chaotic, sometimes soft and warm. I'm going to miss it, and probably will end up binge-watching again it in the near future. The time spent with this show is summed up in the epilogue, with Doek Seon's voiceover (which also made me cry): "A time so warm and pure, that it was painful. Can you hear me? If you can hear me, answer me. My 1988, the days of my youth."
