According to Samcheok Police Station, six boars had attacked two residents of Gangwon Province, injuring one and killing the other after inflicting a grave wound to the thigh.
Seoul Metropolitan Fire and Disaster Headquarters reported that the amount of calls regarding boar sightings in residential areas averaged to be around 29.4 per month from January to November. This is a rise from 15.4 per month last year, and the number has steadily increased since 2011, when the calls were only 3.6 per month.
These sightings and attacks are attributed to the dwindling food sources in the forests, where the hikers and residents go to gather acorns, leaving little for the boars to survive on.
Zoologist Park Byung Kwon stated that wild boars are even more aggressive during the winter season as December to January is their mating season. Further, the boars are now the primary predators in Korea, as the more vicious predators such as bears, tigers, and wolves had long since gone extinct in the country, making them grow more assertive towards the humans.
