MBN News reported on December 21 that a 25-year-old man, identified by his surname Jung, who is training to be a police officer, confined and assaulted his female friend for over three hours back in August.
The female friend, identified by her surname Kim, had told Jung, "Why do you drink everyday?" reprimanding him for his drinking habits. Jung, who took great offense to Kim's remark, went to her house in the dead of the night and not only assaulted her but also confined her for over three hours.
Kim ended up with a bruised right eye, a broken nose, fractured ribs and fingers, which had cost her 10 million KRW (~$8,500) just for the first round of treatments alone. Kim's uncle was reported to have called this horrific act of violence "attempted murder."
For his grievous assault, Jung didn't even get a trial and was only penalized with a small fine of 2 million KRW (~$1,704 USD).
Outraged at the decision, Kim's family has protested the fine by simultaneously submitting a petition at the Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission and the Supreme Prosecutors' Office.
