Korean law school students protest government's decision and threaten to drop out

Buzz

Among the 480 law school students at Seoul National University, 464 submitted forms to withdraw themselves from enrollment, a drastic action which is in response to the government's decision to delay the abolition of the old bar exam.

The law school's student body committee held a press conference in the school's lobby on December 4, in advance of submitting their official withdrawal forms, and demanded, "The Ministry of Justice should recant their decision to postpone the repeal of the bar exam for four years.

The student body president, Park Joon Sung, explained, "Most students don't see the point in continuing their academic career with the delay of the bar exam. The Ministry of Justice need to weigh the gravitas of this matter, and consider the students who drew up withdrawal forms, and how they were faced with flunking and expulsion."

Park added, "The student body is determined to partake in efforts for the law school to operate normally and return to meeting its original objective. If The Ministry of Justice will not recant its decision, then henceforth, we will carry on with our opposition by discussing with other universities."

The students are claiming that the school is taking advantage of society's weaknesses through a discriminatory admissions process, targeting those who are physically and financially vulnerable and acting as a false 'ladder of hope.'

Among the 25 law schools within the country, enrollees in 24 schools opposed the government's deferment to repeal the bar exam by submitting withdrawal forms and refusing the finish the rest of their academic terms.

Under the old law, anyone who passed the bar exam including non-graduates could advance to the Judicial Research and Training Institute and then practice law. However, under the new system, only students who attend the 25 qualifying law schools in Korea will be able to practice law and become lawyers, prosecutors, and judges.
