N.FLYING - LONELY (SINGLE)
Tracklist:
1. Lonely
2. Knock Knock
3. Shamelessly
Earlier this year, FNC Entertainment's rookie band N.Flying made a splash with the track "Awesome." Now they explore a softer sound as they let you know they're "Lonely."
When I first heard the title track, "Lonely," I was unimpressed. But the more I listen to it, the better it becomes. It has a piano riff backing them until we hit the chorus, and it becomes a power ballad at that point with electric guitars. And the chorus itself is catchy. It's not bad, but it probably wouldn't have been the track I led with.
"Knock Knock" is the second song and channels the same energy as "Awesome." It's a pretty good hard rock/rap song and has trotting drums, fuzzy guitars, and scratchy voice suited to hip hop or rock. The message? They're knocking, asking the girl to let them in.
"Shamelessly" actually reminded me of a Rage Against the Machine tune, possibly because of the angry delivery. They spit the raps out, and the blazing guitars on this song really help it pop. The chorus has a great hook, too: "Yeah bomb bomb drop the bomb." The lyrics are pretty much a boast as to how cool they are.
For the most part, it's not a bad single album, though "Lonely" wasn't the strongest track. I'm much more a fan of "Shamelessly," to be honest. It had some anger and energy and an in-your-face attitude that fits a hip-hop group much more than their sensitive side.
MV REVIEW
See the boys wax melancholic in "Lonely."
This no-plot MV consists of the boys in various locations, looking glum. They go from some rural field, to a library, to a living room, and a...bathtub?
The colors are nice and respectful too, really conveying warmth more than anything. Maybe they didn't want anything too down, but their defeated expressions pretty much tell the tale.
Seunghyub is so lonely he's in the tub...fully clothed.
Their stylist must have wanted something toned down because they're all in basic business casual. It's not a bad look and not a bad idea for the tone of the video, but maybe they should have gone for a bit more ostentatiousness to balance out the rest of it.
I think I would have preferred something a little less static. Yes, we literally move from one shot to another, but at the end you kind of shrug your shoulders and say "Okay. Now what?" It's a little bland, and not entirely up to par with some of the other MVs I've seen this year, especially recently. It's not terrible, and at least it's not a box with lights. But it falls a bit flat in my eyes.
Not a bad album, but not a great MV.
