According to reps from the Yeosu Coast Guard, 28-year-old Choi Eun Jin, who was appointed to a coast guard officer role just three months ago, had saved a drowning man around 30kg (~66 lbs) heavier than him.
The rescued man, a 24-year-old named Mr. Kim, was playing in the deep end of the shore (2.5 meters or 8.2 feet) with his friends when he submerged under the water and didn't resurface. Choi sensed something was awry and jumped into the water without a second thought. Choi's vision was obfuscated in the water but he forged on, continuing his search for Kim. Fortunately, Choi was able to pull Kim out of the water even though Kim was much heavier.
Kim's breathing and pulse had stopped, but after seven minutes of CPR by Choi and a lifeguard, he was resuscitated with no serious damage to his health.
Choi said, "Thanks to the orientation and training before being deployed to the beach, I was able to react immediately in the situation," remaining humble.
Thank goodness Choi was there to save the day!
