This past July 27, Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office announced that they indicted a 48-year-old pharmacist named Ms. Cho for hiding the knowledge of her husband's death and collecting around 200,000,000 KRW (~$170,000 USD) in early retirement funds and benefits packages from his workplace.
According to prosecution, between 2007-2009, Cho received 70,000,000 KRW (~$60,000 USD) in wages and unused paid leave from the Ministry of Environment, concealing the fact that her husband had passed away. Further, Cho is under suspicion of having unlawfully applied to receive 140,000,000 KRW (~$120,000 USD) worth of retirement funds. Cho's husband was said to have passed away from liver cancer seven years back.
Last February, Cho was known to have been booked without detention under suspicions of neglecting her husband's corpse for seven years. However, prosecution ruled Cho free of any charges due to Cho's assertion at the time that her "husband is alive," and because the corpse had been cleanly preserved.
It was only after Cho's business partner reported Cho's fraudulent acts to the prosecution that the investigation was initiated.
