A story of one 80-year-old elderly man who returned an envelope containing 1,000,000 Yen (~$8,155) to its original owner is making headlines for his selfless act.
An urgent emergency call was received at the Gunpo Police Station back on June 2 around 1:00 a.m. The caller, an Incheon resident, notified, "My husband lost an envelope containing 1,000,000 Yen which he was supposed to deliver to his client near Gunpo Subway Station." Police officers were immediately dispatched to conduct a thorough search of the Gunpo Station and surrounding vicinity for the missing envelope, but to no avail.
This is where Mr. Kim comes in, an 80-year-old man who collects discarded banknotes for a living. Kim made a visit to Gunpo Police Station eight hours after the money had been lost, and handed in the envelope to authorities with the words, "The person who lost this must be really worried so please be sure to find the original owner."
Mr. Kim, who lives with his 79-year-old wife in an underground home in Gunpo City, gets by on a measly income of just 360,000 KRW (~$323) per month, a combination of a monthly pension of 160,000 KRW (~$144) and 200,00 KRW (~$180), which he makes by scouring the streets from late night to early dawn for any discarded bills.
Officials from Gunpo Police Station expressed their thanks at Mr. Kim's good deed by delivering a letter of appreciation and by finding him employment through their connections with the Gunpo Senior Club. Chief Oh Moon Gyo said, "We're grateful that Mr. Kim was considerate of the other person's circumstance despite his difficult living situation."
