When "Bae Bae" and "Loser" released, I honestly was doubtful about the route that Big Bang was trying to go with their album. Though "Loser" did grab the attention of the general public and fans alike, there just wasn't enough to work with.
A month flew by and Big Bang is back again with "Bang Bang Bang," and I was instantly hooked. The throwback hip-hop beat/chorus was on point despite the cognitive dissonance to your ears, and the overall hype (especially towards the end) made it a nasty club mashup with high threshold. You can read more about the song in our review which will be released later on.
As for the storyline, I have concluded that there is no one coherent storyline. However, each member goes on to display the different types of dominance each holds throughout the MV, which will be explained as I dissect the MV gif by gif. The fact that majority of the MV is shot from bottom-up is not a mistake as it literally has the viewers looking up to the artist in the shot.
Taeyang is the first to appear as the ringleader of an absolutely gorgeous line of greased up dancers. Did I mention that they are shirtless?
Taeyang is the alpha amonst the alphas. He is often idolized by fanboys while younger male idols pay homage to basically all his performances. As we all know, the charisma that he exudes on stage is unimaginably attractive and the MV captures it well.
Next up is T.O.P who is the leader of...himself. This oddly engaging scene is reminiscent of both 'Toy Story' and 'A Space Odessey.' Aside from what the producers were inspired by, we see that T.O.P is displaying self-dominance. He has an incredible control over how he is perceived by the public and, as an A-list idol, it's an important asset to have.
"Hello Ladies. Look at me, I'm hot."
Seungri is one of the members who has been through a critical point during his idol-career. As the youngest member, he struggled through various trials and tribulations, trying to make a name for himself standing in the middle of extremely talented hyungs. Though he doesn't quite have the strongest dominance, it definitely does not mean that he won't get there anytime soon. Seungri has risen from the dead and is stronger than ever with armor and everything.
"Pew, pew."
"Look ma--no hands!"
Meanwhile Daesung competes with female dancers to see who's more fabulous...
Daesung was never the one to be titled as being 'dominant,' but we can all agree that his domain was always on stage, especially when his voice is at the center of attention. The only part of the MV that is reminiscent of an actual stage is during Daesung's cut, not to mention the girls with their jazz fingers at his face and mouth, putting focus on his vocals. Though he continues to lose lines with each release, he also continues to show control with his voice.
Also note that the voice track increases and the excess beats drop out during his part.
"I'M FABULOUS!"
Lastly, but definitely not the least, G-Dragon. This came off extremely strange at first for very obvious 19+ reference reasons. Yes, he has a leash on a girl and is whipping it like he just doesn't care. However, a lot of people didn't notice is that he is also chained to the girl, wearing the same collar, revealing that the role of dominance can be interchangeable. G-Dragon practices dual-dominance, but also makes an effort to keep everyone in check when needed. While he is still the leader of the whole, he still feels connected to his members.
"Oh, you gon' learn today."
"I DON'T KNOW WHY I'M SCREAMING, BUT I LOVE ITTT"
Intense head-banging to end the MV
I must have watched this MV at least 100 times while writing all this and, I must say, it really doesn't get old. As always, their fashion is on-point (excluding their choice of the Native American headdress on Seungri), and I'm sure YouTube beauty gurus are frantically collecting all their glittered makeup, getting ready to do a G-Dragon inspired make-up.
The MV is for the most part shot at a low angle, making the subject look powerful. However, it adjusts to a neutral shot towards the end so that you can get the full look at Big Bang's re-creation of YG Nation and its glory at an eye level.
